Canadian Municipality Awards $30 M Streetlight Contract to G.J. Cahill and Co.

Halifax regional council has awarded a CA $37 million (US $30 million) contract to bidder G.J. Cahill and Co. to design, supply and install LED streetlights throughout the Canadian muncipality, reported Herald News recently.

G.J. Cahill has acquired a major stake out of the CA $48-million project, Halifax had paid $ 7 million to purchase all the region’s streetlights from Nova Scotia Power in 2014.

Through energy and maintenance savings, Halifax expects to be paid off in less than a decade. The LED streetlights are expected to cut energy and maintenance costs from CA $7 million in 2014 to CA$ 2 million per year, equivalent to paying off upfront project costs through savings by 2024.

According to Halifax senior traffic operations engineer Tanya Davis the LED streetlights will be equipped with sensors that will automatically inform the municipality of malfunctioning lights.

G.J. Cahill will oversee the project management and installation, while LED Roadway Lighting will supply LED light bulbs, and Silver Springs Network will provide the adaptive technology.

Halifax owns and maintains all 43,000 streetlights in the region, except for provincially owned streetlights on the 100-series highway.
