TrendForce: HDR and Local Dimming Enter Automotive Display Markets

According to the latest report of TrendForce, “2020 Global Automotive LED Product Trend and Regional Market Analysis,” the market demand for automotive panel has reached 134-144 million units in 2019-2020 with center informative display accounting for the highest share. This was estimated based on the sales of car shipment. Currently, 12.3 inch is the mainstream size for center informative display, which is designed with two or three connected panels, or even designed into a whole panel sized 30 to 50 inch.

Since 2020, car makers attempt to implement HDR and local dimming technologies to enable automotive display to provide higher brightness and better contrast ratio. Unlike consumer electronics, automotive display does not need to be very thin to meet the requirements of clients. So it can use a fewer number of LEDs.

In order to reach higher yield, many makers also adopt LED package or Mini LED matched with drive IC to achieve HDR local dimming display. Given the demand for local dimming and cost requirements, mainstream number for dimming zone is about 60-384 zones. Major players include GM, Innolux, AUO, Macroblock, Nichia, OSRAM, Everlight and Lextar. Macroblock recently rolled out 48-channel drive IC supporting 32-scan design. It is conformed to AEC-Q100 and can control 1,536 LED pixels as well as realizing HDR and local dimming. Thereby, it can perform effectively in automotive display market.

Cadillac LYRIQ, owned by General Motors, adopts a 34-inch automotive display with >3,000 local dimming zones driven by active matrix. The major suppliers are Innolux and Everlight. TrendForce anticipated that the trend of HDR and Local Dimming technologies will generally increase in high-class car model.
