E-J Electric Completes Major Electric Construction and Design Installation of Lighting on the Kosciuszko Bridge

E-J Electric Installation Co. (E-J Electric) announced their participation in the construction of phase one of the new Kosciuszko Bridge. The new bridge, a 1.1-mile segment above the industrial Newtown Creek on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, is the first major New York City bridge to open in more than 50 years. The bridge officially opened to traffic with a colorful LED light show designed by E-J Electric.

The E-J Electric team provided full electrical services for the new bridge including power and roadway lighting, ITS systems, LED lighting and new Traffic Signal Installations. E-J Electric successfully completed construction on the largest design-build project ever awarded by the New York State Department of Transportation for this project – all before the deadline and within the set budget.

Bridge History and Evolution

Originally built in 1939, the Kosciusko Bridge is not only the first major new bridge since the Verrazano-Narrows in 1964, but the first cable-stayed in New York State. The bridge features unique, aesthetically-pleasing LED lighting that displays the sleek architecture as well as new traffic signals. The LED lighting was highlighted earlier this year when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo marked the opening of the bridge with a light show.

Even more recently, this projected was recognized by Engineering News-Record as one of 2017's best projects completed this year, along with another project E-J Electric worked on for the Second Avenue Subway.A colorful light signaled the official opening of the bridge to traffic. The evening's ceremony was lit up in coordination with the Empire State Building and attended by hundreds of guests.

"Nearly 78 years old, the evolution of New York City's Kosciuszko Bridge denotes the major infrastructure and economic advancements being made in the city," said E-J Electric President and CEO Anthony Mann. "E-J Electric is overjoyed that the bridge has received recognition from ENR New York's 2017 Best Projects list and looks forward to participating in other monumental construction projects."
