An initial blueprint of what Moore Park's National Football Stadium (NFS) could look like upon completion has been revealed today by the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust.

The design for the new rectangular venue has been modelled on some of the world's most advanced stadia and is set to be the archetype for the future of sport in Australia.

Scalable to "club" and "championship" mode, the NFS will change the modern day sporting experience for fans, with preliminary plans in place to include drop-down LED curtains.

The mesh design will keep sound in the lower tier to minimise impact on residents whilst creating an intimate atmosphere for events that attract smaller than capacity crowds.

Team specific visuals can be configured on the screens during both day-time and night-time games, displaying branded content which will light up the match day experience for fans.

"We're looking at the future needs of NSW's major sports and providing the best possible rectangular stadium for all three codes (rugby league, rugby union and football)," said Trust Chief Executive Jamie Barkley.

"I'm not aware of this being done anywhere else in the world because elsewhere they design stadiums for the expected demand of one club or one sport. But we think the two modes will allow us to deliver super match-day experiences for fans of football codes on different occasions.

"For the future needs of NSW this has to be a rectangular stadium and it has to be able to cope for different crowds and we think this will be the best in Australia."

The detailed design phase for the NFS is the beginning of a major development at Moore Park, which will also see through the completion of the SCG masterplan.

In September this year NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres announced that more than $1 billion will be invested in the stadia network over the next decade, with $600 million set aside as part of the Rebuilding NSW project.
