AIXTRON Qualified for Micro LED production at PlayNitride

AIXTRON announced that PlayNitride has qualified its AIX G5+ C MOCVD system for the manufacturing of GaN-based (gallium nitride) Micro LEDs, concluding the joint collaboration agreement signed in January.

The German equipment provider and Micro LED specialist PlayNitride reported their partnership in January 2019 to speed up Micro LED mass production with AIXTRON’s AIX G5+ C platform. According to AIXTRON, PlayNitride ordered another tool for expanding its capacities for high-volume production of Micro LEDs.

The Micro LED technology is on the verge to relieve existing display technologies for next-gen consumer products. Since displays made of Micro LEDs consist of micron-sized LED arrays forming individual sub-pixel elements, they offer lowest power consumption while exhibiting superior pixel density, contrast ratio and brightness at the same time. In comparison to the existing LCD and OLED technologies, Micro LEDs open new opportunities for the design of consumer mobile products as well as premium TV displays.

Dr. Charles Li, CEO & Chairman at PlayNitride, said, “We are pleased that we were able to successfully qualify the AIX G5+ C by meeting the requirements for Micro LED processing. AIXTRON’s advanced Planetary® technology addresses these tightened Micro LED industry standards at best: excellent wavelength uniformity, high yield and high-volume manufacturing against lowest cost per wafer.”

PlayNitride has teamed up with RiTdisplay to adopt its Micro LED technology on wearable products. They have jointly showcased a 1.25-inch Micro LED display on glass substrate and a 0.94-inch thin film based flexible Micro LED display. Mass production of the products was scheduled in 2020, according to RiTdisplay.
