UVC LED Technology Expand to Home Appliances for Water Purification

The market demands for disinfection have climbed significantly this year with the outbreak of COVID-19, leading to greater attention to UVC LED. In addition to surface and air disinfection, water purification is one of the major focuses of UVC LED manufacturers and home appliance brands.

Featured with compacted size and installation flexibility, UVC LEDs can be mounted at the outlet of water dispenser to ensure the safety of drinking water. Recently many home appliance brands have launched new products adopting the technology. LG presented its latest refrigerator with UVnano technology while ACUO, a Taiwan-based water dispenser maker, also introduced a water purification module based on UVC LED.

LG unveiled its new refrigerator models at IFA 2020 including the new generation of InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerator with UVnano. The product deploys UV LED technology to disinfect the water dispenser outlets once every hour (or anytime manually) to remove up to 99.99% of bacteria and viruses.

Meanwhile, ACUO announced its partnership with ITRI to develop a UVC LED water purification module. ITRI provided its proprietary technology of axial projection design to enable 99.9% disinfecting rate. The embedded LED would automatically turns on when it detect water flow and stop functioning once the water pause. In this way, the module can save up to 50% power consumption.
