Farmington Hills Gets $140,000 Grant for LED Lighting at Fire Station
(City of Farmington Hills, Aug. 22, 2024)
Farmington Hills, MI- The City of Farmington Hills has been awarded an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) of over $140,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy. This grant will support the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance energy efficiency and conservation by funding the installation of light emitting diode (LED) lighting at Fire Station #4, located at 28711 Drake Road. The implementation of LED lighting will bring multiple benefits, including reduced energy consumption, improved light quality, extended lifespan of lighting fixtures, lower operating costs and decreased greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation.
“We are grateful to the Department of Energy for this grant, which will be instrumental in helping the City achieve its energy efficiency goals,” said City Manager Gary Mekjian. “This funding makes necessary upgrades to City facilities possible, while allowing for reallocation of resources to other critical uses. This ultimately benefits taxpayers and supports the City’s commitment to sustainability.”

This project aligns with the City’s broader objectives, including a 10% reduction in energy use in City-owned buildings by 2027 and a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2020 to 2050. The City’s Capital Improvement Plan and Facilities Condition Assessment have played a crucial role in identifying and prioritizing projects that align with the City’s energy efficiency and sustainability objectives.
City officials were notified of the grant eligibility by the Department of Energy and submitted the necessary application to secure the funds. The next step in the process is to request bids within the year to ensure that the retrofit at Fire Station #4 is completed efficiently and effectively. The grant administration will be overseen by the City’s Community Development Office, part of the Planning and Community Development Department.
