TCL to Boost Mini LED Backlight TV Shipment, Lifting Supply Chain Business

Mini LED backlight display applications are spreading with increasing products entering the market including notebooks, monitors and TVs. Leading brands like Apple and Samsung are going to launch products based on the technology in 2021 as well. Meanwhile, TCL, the Chinese TV brands who released Mini LED backlit TVs last year, is reportedly increasing the product shipment.

In 2019, TCL launched 65- and 75-inch Mini LED backlit TVs. The company changed its pricing strategy this year by cutting the 65-inch TV from $1,999 to US$999 and the 75-inch from 2,999 to 1,799. TLC aimed to set the price lower then OLED TV to boost shipment, targeting a shipment of 10,000 unit per month in the second half of 2020.

According to a report of TechNews, TCL plans to push the shipment of Mini LED backlit TV from a few thousand a month to the next level of over 10,000 each month. Since the TV products of TCL use up to 15,000 units of Mini LED per unit, it is expected that the Mini LED chip usage will reach up to 1 billion units per year.

TechNew also reported that the Mini LED backlit TVs of TCL are using passive drive plan with PCB backplane as before. Mini LED chips were provided by Taiwanese packaging company Everlight and the panel by CSOT.

Mini LED is one of the major developments of Everlight in recent years. Apart from proactively expanding its business in large size Mini LED TV, the company also pushes hard in the automotive market. TCL’s climbing Mini LED TV shipment is expected to drive Everlight’s business performance in 2H20.
