Korean media outlet The Elec reported that Samsung Display underwent a restructuring on July 1, during which it added an IT Sales Team to its IT Business Division. Previously, the division only consisted of an IT Technology Team and a Development Team.
The report mentioned that the establishment of the IT Sales Team appears to be part of Samsung Display’s broader preparations to fully launch its IT OLED business. While Apple’s first OLED iPad, released last year, saw underwhelming sales, the company still plans to gradually roll out OLED MacBooks starting next year. Samsung Display intends to supply OLED panels for these devices through its 8.6-generation OLED production line.
In December 2024, Samsung Display announced that Vice President Lee Jong-hyuk (romanized) of the Large Panel Business Division would concurrently serve as head of the IT Business Division, while Vice President Lee Joo-hyung (romanized) would take over as head of the Small and Medium Panel Business Division.
The Large Panel Business Division focuses on producing quantum dot (QD)-OLED panels for TVs and monitors, while the Small and Medium Panel Business Division is mainly responsible for OLED panels used in Samsung Galaxy smartphones and Apple’s iPhones.
Industry sources at the time believed that appointing the head of the Large Panel Division to also lead the IT Business Division would benefit the overall expansion of Samsung Display’s IT OLED business. Although QD-OLED technology for monitors differs from small- and medium-sized IT OLED technologies used in tablets and laptops, aligning more closely with customer demands and staying on top of tech trends could create synergy. It could also help avoid confusion when offering similar-sized but technically different products to the same clients.
Additionally, as part of the July 1 personnel changes, the heads (both Vice Presidents) of the Corporate Planning Group at headquarters and the Small and Medium Panel Business Planning Group exchanged positions. While both roles involve investment decisions, the Corporate Planning Group at HQ also oversees matters related to Samsung Electronics’ Special Business Support Task Force (TF).
