【Exclusive Interview】Seoul Semiconductor’s Automotive Lighting Product Strategies in 2023

According to TrendForce’s latest report ,“2022 Global Automotive LED Product Trend and Regional Market Analysis”, despite the fact that automotive market demand fell due to the Russian-Ukraine conflicts and the Pandemic in China, automotive LED market demand in 2022 increases with the raise in market share of LED headlight and the development of advanced technologies including intelligent headlight, logo lamp, intelligent ambient lamp, Mini LED / HDR automotive display. Looking ahead, automotive lighting products tend to be characterized by personalization, communication display and driver assistance. In this context, TrendForce was honored to interview Allan Yu, sales VP of Seoul Semiconductor’s Shanghai branch company, who kindly shared us with the company’s product strategies of automotive lighting LED.

Yu introduced that Seoul Semiconductor grandly launched WICOP, nPola and UHL (Ultra High Luminance) series in response to the new trend of ADB LED and Ultra Slim headlight source. Of all, WICOP has gained a share of up to 10% in automotive LED market. nPola LED spotlights high brightness and high current and has been adopted by China-based and Korea-based car makers. UHL products feature compact size with a package size of only 1.88x1.61mm and chip area of only 0.54mm2.

In face of the growing demand of autonomous driving technology, car makers plan to use Cyan WICOP to enable the oncoming cars and pedestrians to clearly identify that this car is currently automatically driving. Thus, Seoul Semiconductor developed Cyan 3014 LED featuring low current and low power.

New dichromatic LED device is applicable to the 2-in-1 application combing DRL and turn light, using flip chip with high light output and AIN substrate with high thermal conductivity and anti-sulfur fluorescent adhesive, with an aim to maintain high color rending and high brightness of a unit area even at an high temperature.

Besides, high color-rending Sunlike LED (CRI>96) and color temperature tunable (2,700-6,500K) white LED have been used in reading light, roof light, make-up mirror, foot room illumination, etc.

Yu also mentioned that Seoul Semiconductor intends to launch WICOP Pixel LED in 2023 in reaction to the market demand for ADB.
