【Exclusive Interview】Aledia Releases 3D Nanowire LED with 32% EQE, Setting Industry Benchmarks

Aledia, France-based, founded in 2011, developed a technology to grow 3D GaN LEDs on 200 / 300 mm silicon wafers using CMOS wafer-fabrication processes and tools. Born from the scientific laboratories of the prestigious CEA-Leti, Aledia is today at the forefront of a technological revolution. After a decade of innovation and development, Aledia is shaping the future of display with its 3D Nanowire LED technology. This major advancement, significantly reducing the cost of Micro LED display, is crucial for the widespread adoption in a wide range of display applications. Excellence and innovation form the core of Aledia’s DNA. TrendForce was very honored to have an exclusive interview with Felix Marchal (Chief Sales Officer) and Eric Butaud (Product Manager) of Aledia, who shared the company progress and business target at Touch Taiwan 2024.

Aledia successfully debuted three products at Touch Taiwan 2024. Firstly, 160x160µm 2D LED bonded with CMOS driver, aiming to be applied for active matrix backlight market with dimming zone 2,000 and above.

In addition, Aledia has reached a significant milestone on single 3D Nanowire LEDs. The EQE of Blue Micro LED has come to 32% for Micro LED chips as small as 3.5µm Micro LEDs displays can be built from mass transfer and color conversion of these Micro LED chips on a TFT backplane.

Marchal also indicated that there are two solutions of 160x160µm 3D Nanowire based RGB LEDs, divided into with CMOS drivers for passive Matrix backplane, and without CMOS drivers for TFT based tiles. Furthermore, those products are targeted on ≤P0.7 ultra-fine pitch display. Since the bottleneck and cost reduction challenges on Micro LED display are mass transfer, repair and backplane, when it comes to active-matrix display, Aledia proposed 160x160µm 3D Nanowire LEDs in the market. Three colors are build in the same LED chip to avoid mass transfer and side wiring LTPS by simply and directly bonded on 2-layer PCBs.

Finally, Aledia successfully demonstrated 300mm Nanowire Micro LED on silicon wafer at the exhibition. The diameter of Nanowire Micro LED is tiny to 1µm.

Marchal indicated that Aledia can see the market and player progress improvement year by year. Therefore, the company takes positive attitude toward Micro LED display market development. Aledia fully understands customer needs and aims to provide the effective solution to the market.
