Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's biggest TV brand by revenue, said it sold 2.6 million TVs using LED backlight units in 2009, outperforming its earlier target. The company also confirmed an LED-backlight TV sales target for this year of 10 million units.
LCD TV sets featuring LED are thinner, more power-efficient and provide better images than those lit by traditional CCFLs. Samsung has enjoyed an early lead in the market but faces deepening competition. As the price premium for LED-backlight models have fallen, Samsung plans to offer a broader lineup in 2010 to expand the market. Samsung said in September it aimed to sell at least 2 million LED TVs in 2009 and 10 million or more in 2010.
