Merck to present innovative products for 3D and OLED displays at the IMID in Seoul, Korea

Merck puts the spotlight on licristal®, liquid crystal mixtures as advanced PS-VA material and licrivue®, a range of ready-to-use reactive mesogen formulations with its advantages for 3D displays over conventional LCD technologies

Merck KGaA announced that it will be exhibiting at the IMID / IDMC / Asia Display 2010 from October 11 to 15, 2010 in Seoul (Korea). The global pharmaceutical and chemical company will be highlighting its innovative products for the display and lighting segments, focusing on new technologies for 3D displays.

The Merck product range includes licristal® liquid crystals and licrivue® reactive mesogens, livilux® OLED materials (Organic Light Emitting Diodes), lisicon® organic electronics, isishape® printable etching pastes, as well as isiphor™ phosphorus materials for LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). They all are used in conventional as well as 3D displays, LCD televisions, notebooks, PC monitors, mobile telephones and many other digital displays. More than 2,500 patents are evidence of Merck’s innovative strength.
All Merck products mentioned above are highly innovative, energy efficient and eco-friendly, enabling eco-friendly manufacturing processes while also reducing the energy consumption of the devices.

Especially for most advanced LCD applications, the diverse anisotropic optical properties of reactive mesogens (RM) and the polymer films formed from them are extremely interesting. Merck claims to be the first company worldwide to have commercialized reactive mesogen formulations for in-cell patterned retarders used in transflective TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCDs and parallax barriers used in 3D displays for mobile applications. The latest notebooks with 3D capability based on the patterned retarder film type using Merck’s reactive mesogen materials recently became commercially available.

Five experts will be presenting the latest research results as well as the green product policy of Merck at the IMID. The scientists and managers Böhm, Harding, Wittek and Becker are invited speakers:
- Contributions of Merck as Material Manufacturer to Green Displays and Electronics, speaker: Werner Becker, Performance Materials, Senior Director Technology and Head Regulatory Services, Merck KGaA, Germany (October 13, 2010, 03:10 – 03:35 p.m.)
- Material Concepts for Solution-Processable OLED Materials at Merck, speaker: Anna Hayer, Head of Laboratory OLED Physics, Merck KGaA, Germany (October 14, 2010, 03:10 – 03:30 p.m.)

Also in 2010, the presentation of the “Merck Award” will take place again during the IMID. Outstanding scientific contributions to display technologies by young scientists will be honored with a ceremony considering researches and developments about Liquid Crystals.
