Verticle Creates the World`s First Hexagonal LED Chip

Verticle ,an LED chip company from Dublin, California, has created the world's first hexagonal LED chip named as HoneycombTM LED Chip, which is a vertically structured LED chip developed especially for high power LED applications.

This hexagonal LED chip features many advantages. Firstly, due to hexagon is the most closely-packed structure inside of a circular wafer, it is a higher chip count.  A wafer can yield 15% more haxagonal chips than square or rectangular chips of equivalent size.

Secondly, with the resulting higher light output than conventional chips, hexagonal chip can aid in the current spreading.

Thirdly, the light output enhancement after packaging. HoneycombTM chip produces a beam profile which is much closer to the circular shape of circular lens used in optic design. In comparison, the beam profile of the typical square or rectangular chip, when combined with circular lens, is normally distorted.

Despite of these advantages, because of the difficulty in chip separation with conventional scribing or dicing, it has not been realized in production up to now.

However, with Verticle’s chemical chip separation technique that is a highly innovative chip singulation technique which can chemically etch the street line, to easily produce chips of any shape , the chip separation step much easier and quicker than conventional chip separation techniques.

Furthermore, by this technique, Verticle can handle multiple wafers in one batch, resulting in chip separation throughputs which are 500 times greater than with conventional chip separation methods.
