Nexxus uses Bayer MaterialScience material for Array LED lamps

-- Eco-friendly material from Bayer MaterialScience LLC helps Nexxus Lighting fuse sustainability with exceptional lighting performance

-- Array LED lamp line uses Bayblend® FR610 GR PC/ABS blend resin to brighten tomorrow, today

Utilizing an eco-friendly grade of Bayer MaterialScience LLC’s Bayblend® polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) blend resin, Nexxus Lighting Inc. has created a “green” LED lamp that decreases energy use without compromising quality.

Additionally, injection molding the lamp housings for its ArrayTM Lighting line with this material also reduces Nexxus Lighting’s carbon footprint, helping the company create a brighter tomorrow, today.

“Our Array line of lamps uses very little metal, compared with most competitors on the market, and we are one of the only companies that we know of to utilize recycled plastics in our shell design,” said Mike Bauer, CEO of Nexxus Lighting Inc. “Of all the resin providers we considered, Bayer MaterialScience LLC offered us the best quality product that meets our recycled plastic demands,” Bauer continued, noting that utilizing plastic for the housings also dramatically reduces the weight of the lamps.

Bayblend FR610 GR PC/ABS blend resin offers a minimum of 10 percent post-consumer recycled content and at least 30 percent post-industrial recycled content for a total of at least 40 percent recycled content. Importantly, for this application, the antimony-, bromine-, and chlorine-free material also meets UL 94 V0 at 1.5 mm thickness and 5VA at 3.0 mm thickness, while at the same time maintaining the properties of a typical flame-rated PC/ABS product, including good rigidity, hardness, dimensional stability, impact strength and creep resistance.

The Array line of lamps is designed and engineered to use patent pending, Selective Heat Sink Technology™ (SHS), a ground-breaking approach to thermal management, according to Nexxus Lighting. SHS Technology uses proprietary design and materials to lower thermal resistance to record levels, which allows an array of low power, high efficacy LEDs to achieve exceptional performance.

Nexxus Lighting's Array LED lamps use a larger number (40-120) of high efficacy, low power dies and its SHS Technology places thermal heat sink rods at key junction points in the circuit board. This means heat is drawn away right at the source and moved away as quickly as possible to keep the LEDs and electrical components cool and efficient. According to Bauer, this also has given Nexxus Lighting the ability to automate the process, reducing cost and enabling the company to meet growing customer demand.

Bayer MaterialScience experts provided initial design and technical assistance to help Nexxus Lighting ensure that its finished product was a durable, long-lasting, unique and intricately designed product, Bauer said.

“We commend Nexxus Lighting for designing and producing such an innovative, environmentally friendly product,” said Gerry DiBattista, market segment leader, IT, Electrical/Electronics Polycarbonates, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. “We believe this application demonstrates our commitment to developing sustainable products that do not sacrifice quality.”
