Advanced lighting creates a customized, interactive and community-friendly entertainment experience
Lumenpulse Inc., a leading innovator and manufacturer of high performance, architectural LED-based lighting solutions for commercial, institutional, and urban environments, today announced an exciting new client installation at BC Place Stadium, a landmark -- and now gem -- of the Vancouver skyline.
After over 25 years of hosting a range of sports, musical, cultural, community and exhibition events featuring everything from a Pope John Paul II address, and Madonna and Michael Jackson concerts... to Winter Olympics ceremonies and events, and BC Lions Canadian Football League games, the structure underwent a major revitalization and reconfiguration.
Stadium owners BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo) took the opportunity to reinvent the stadium’s guest experience and its look and feel from the inside and out. Lead architects Stantec Architecture Ltd. Were brought in to create a design that would make the stadium stand out as an iconic part of the cityscape and lighting consultants C.M. Kling were also hired.
As a result Lumenpulse Lumenfacade™ and Lumenbeam™ products were chosen to work in tandem with striking architectural features like a spectacular cable and mast -supported retractable roof and a facade made of ETFE (a transparent polymer), to bring the stadium to life.
As part of a $563 million renovation, Lumenfacade RGB fixtures are mounted on the steel beams supporting the translucent facade material to create an ethereal scrim of color around the stadium, while Lumenbeam RGB luminaires are mounted on the masts to bathe the roof in colored light.
When sports teams are in the house Lumenpulse’s products light the stadium with the signature colors of each team, building team spirit inside and allowing people outside to see who’s playing. Other light shows feature gradual-moving abstract designs on the facade with fixed roof colors and dynamic shows designed to involve the crowd at key moments like when a goal is scored, or when the audience participates in “The Wave.”
The results are dazzling, distinctive and interactive but are reserved for special events to respect neighboring office buildings and nearby apartments.
“We are very excited to be involved with the dynamic new look and fan experience happening at an iconic venue like BC Place,” said François-Xavier Souvay, Founder, President and CEO of Lumenpulse. “Sports and entertainment stadiums are part of the fabric of a city and we are seeing more and more interest from them in using LED fixtures as a part of their design vision to deliver fresh and memorable entertainment experiences.” In addition to working with BC Place, Lumenpulse is also involved with projects at Soldier Field in Chicago and Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.
With a switch-on date of September 2011 at BC Place for the Lumenpulse LED fixtures its new “lease on light” is just getting started, most immediately readying to hold the 99th CFL Grey Cup on November 27th.
“We’re very happy with the results and this is really just the beginning. The different permeations of what we can do with the LED fixtures have yet to be fully realized and we’re looking forward to seeing shows that take additional advantage of the technology. For example the lighting could be choreographed to mirror music. It really provides a dynamic facade that will offer options for years to come,” said Laurenz Kosichek, Senior Associate, Stantec Architecture Ltd.
