The National Mall Gets LED Makeover

The historic bronze streetlamps that line America's front yard, the National Mall in Washington, D.C., has gotten LED makeover this week.

The Mall's high intensity discharge and compact fluorescent lamp lighting there were retrofitted with LEDs, donated by lighting manufacturer Osram Sylvania and installed pro bono by the city's electric utility Pepco. The LEDs are expected to use up to 65% less energy and last up to 25 years.
