Unity Opto Becomes the Exclusively LED Backlight Supplier of Nexus 7

Taiwan LED manufacturer Unity Opto Technology Ltd. has exclusively supplied item’s LED backlight to “Nexus 7”, the first tablet computer jointly developed by Asus and Google, a renowned online search engine to be launched in America in July.

A reliable source has informed that Nexus 7 uses touch-screen technologies of Hydis, a South Korea–based panel manufacturer, and uses LED chips from Formosa Epitaxy Incorporation (Forepi).

And with Nexus 7 scheduled for launch this month, Unity begun shipping  LED backlights at least two to three months ago. Since April, Unity has shipped over three million LED backlights for Nexus 7, and its shipments for “non-Apple” tablet computers are expected to reach 10 million units in 2012.

Unity is a major LED backlight supplier to Asus. This year non-Apple tablet computers are expected to take 30~ 40% market share to drive Unity’s LED backlight shipments to 10 million units this year, to generate demand for about 300 million LED chips.
