Apple Rumored to Initiate Arizona Sapphire Plant this Month for ‘Critical’ Component

Apple is rumored to be actively pursuing the launch of its new sapphire plant in Mesa, Arizona for a “critical new sub-component,” according to a report by MacRumor based on documents from 9to5Mac.The company is rumored to open the plant by February.

James Patton, Apple's Deputy Director of Global Trade Compliance has requested expedited approval from the U.S. Foreign-Trade Zone Board to grant two requests that would allow Apple to meet its timeline for Feb. 2014. Apple and GT Advanced Technology have been recruiting potential employees for the sapphire plant, according to the documents.

The documents also indicated the sapphire plant would be creating a “critical new sub-component” to be applied in Apple’s consumer electronics. It remains unclear as what the new component will be, but the report speculated Apple which already deploys sapphire glass to protect the iPhones’ camera lenses and the iPhone 5s’ Touch ID home button, could also be used ti create full-screen displays made out of sapphire or iWatch.
