Coldwater, a city in the state of Michigan in U.S., is to look brighter soon. Coldwater Board of Public Utilities announced that it will only be supplying LED fixture in outdoor or security illumination.

The utility trustees will issue a new rental rate to Coldwater Council to reflect the switch at the beginning. All streetlights in the city will be replaced with LEDs, except for decorative lamps in downtown and along U.S. 12.

Dating back to Jan 2014, Bob Granger, energy optimization manager of CBPU, called for the LED streetlight conversion and started with 40 pinpoint LEDs at 47 watts per unit. The LEDs are much more energy efficient compared to high pressure sodium’s 210 watts per lamp.

In addition, the LED streetlight conversion will also slash the city’s maintenance bill.

The LED streetlight conversion cost US $459,355, which will pay back in 4.8 years in terms of energy saving and maintenance cut.

CBPU will only provide LED fixtures for security and outdoor illuminations at US $9.08 per year, using 6,300lm, 72W LED lamps.
