Indian Rail Company Distributes LED Bulbs to Employees to Conserve Energy

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) in India has implemented the central government sponsored Domestic Efficient Lighting Program (DELP) in areas under its jurisdiction, reported The Times of India.

Under the program, the LED bulbs are distributed to employees at a discount price. Employees can buy ten 7W LED bulbs at a subsidized price of INR 100 (US $1.50) per piece.

"We promote LED bulbs because its consumes less energy and runs for 25,000 burning hours," said ECoR' s deputy chief electrical engineer Manoj Kumar Sahu.

In total there are 4,500 employees in the railway company’s carriage repair workshop located in Mancheswar and EcoR headquarters. Among these at least 2,660 staff purchased 30,000 LED bulbs by Monday, said ECoR chief public relations officer J P Mishra.

Around 40,000 employees are working under three different divisions of ECoR zone. "Three lakh (30,000) bulbs will be distributed in first phase at a concession rate till January 10," he added.

On the occasion of the energy conservation week that began on Monday, such bulbs were distributed at Khurda Road division. It will be later taken up at Sambalpur division of the zone.

"If the employees don't get bulbs in the first phase, they can get it in the second phase," said Mishra.

The ECoR also plans to turn solar power and other renewable energy to cut its electricity consumption. Solar panels are being installed onto rooftops of ECoR headquarters to yield 100 kilowatt peak. "The process will be completed by March 2016," he added.

Solar lanterns were also installed in 28 level-crossing gates in the state and solar water heaters system installed in certain selected locations.
