Hot Picks of the Week April 4-24
Highlights this week:
-
Some bad news for manufacturers vying the lucrative European lighting market. The EU, sadly has decided to extend the halogen bulb ban to 2018, which could affect LED sales somewhat.
-
World’s second largest lighting manufacturer Osram sent shockwaves throughout the industry with the announcement it was spinning off its luminaire business including traditional lighting business CBL and LED lamp business LLS. Osram is believed to be focusing on automotive lighting technologies, and other specialty lighting in the near future, while keeping LED chip and package business Osram Opto running, according to LEDinside’s understanding.
-
The jury in Michigan court, U.S. have ruled in favor of Everlight in its three year lawsuit against Nichia. Everlight filed the suit against Nichia in 2012, seeking the court to invalidate the latter’s U.S. patents No. 5,998,925 and No 7,531,960. LEDinside could not reach Nichia for further comments, but will keep the industry posted about future developments in the legal case.
-
More Apple rumors. A report from Taiwanese media UDN has singled out AUO as the 4-inch iPhone 7 display supplier. According to Roger Chu, Research Director, LEDinside, we still will not be seeing sapphire screens on the iPhone 7 because the sapphire supply chain is simply not ready to meet Apple’s massive demands. Other media reports by Macworld and others are already projecting possible new technologies that will be incorporated into the new phone. Meanwhile, Apple has explained how green LEDs in Apple Watch delivered to customers this week can actually take a person’s pulse.
