Dubai Municipality and Philips Lighting Launch Efficient Lamp Initiative

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Municipality and Philips Lighting today announced the launch of the Dubai Lamp, the world’s most energy efficient commercially available LED lamp.* The announcement was made at the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) in Dubai.

The Dubai Lamp Initiative is a unique research partnership between Philips Lighting and Dubai Municipality, resulting in the development of the world’s first commercially available 200 lumen per watt LED lamp, available in widely used shapes and colors. The initiative underlines Dubai’s commitment to becoming the world’s most sustainable city.

By replacing conventional lamps with Dubai Lamp, households and enterprises can reduce electricity used for lighting by up to 90%. Besides raising light and energy efficiency to new levels, the Dubai Lamp is extremely durable with an average lifespan of up to 15 times longer than conventional lamps.

The lamps will be widely available in Dubai before the end of the year in four versions (see Notes to Editors), both in cool daylight and warm white colors. With these versions, the Dubai Lamp could replace 80% of conventional lamps used in Dubai homes. Dubai Municipality and Philips Lighting are preparing for the supply of two million Dubai Lamps for residential and professional use across the city in 2017. This could increase to 10 million lamps by 2021.

Speaking at the launch, Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality said: “His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has always been keen to promote such green initiatives designed to encourage sustainable development, which contributes significantly towards the national economy and benefits future generations. It is very encouraging for the clean energy sector to see such unique achievements led by Dubai providing a role model for the world.”

He said that the Dubai Lamp Initiative aims to raise public awareness of the need for energy saving and for reduction of carbon emissions. “The Initiative supports the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy which targets a 30% reduction in energy consumption by 2030 and the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions by 16% by 2021,” added Lootah.

Eric Rondolat, CEO of Philips Lighting said : “This focused and result-driven partnership with Dubai Municipality is a prime example of how a public-private partnership can deliver innovation that is practical and cost-effective for both consumer and professional markets while helping to combat the serious issue of climate change. Over the past three years we have worked with the Municipality to transform municipal buildings with energy efficient LED lighting. This latest initiative is a natural next step which will help to set a new benchmark in energy efficiency and sustainable development in Dubai.”

*The candle and bulb versions of the Dubai Lamp are the most energy efficient commercially available mains voltage LED retrofit lamps. Although 200 lumen per watt has been achieved before at LED die level and in laboratories (including a prototype TLED by Philips in 2013), these versions of the Dubai Lamp are believed to be the first 200 lumen per watt mains voltage LED retrofit lamps on the market.
