Hot Picks of the Week Feb.29-March 4

Highlights this week:

Toshiba Lighting has finally made some progress in selling its less profitable Chinese production line to appliance manufacturer Konka Group. The company is withdrawing from the Chinese consumer lighting market, and plans to move operations back to Japan.

Chinese investment consortium Go Scale Capital has made a comeback in its bid for a part of Philips Lighting, a surprising move considering it’s last bid for former Philips LED component business Lumileds and automotive lighting was shut down by the U.S. government.

The OLED market has been very active over the past two weeks, with further rumors about Samsung’s scaling up OLED production for its TV business, and future iPhone models. Osram and Universal Display have also signed an OLED material evaluation agreement this week. In Europe, top OLED manufacturers have formed a new consortium and pilot production line Pi-scale to accelerate the commercialization of OLED.

Developments in lighting standards this week include ANSI Accredited Standards Committee C78 confirmation of six lighting standards, and China’s new lighting standards GB7000.1-2015 introduction of blue-light hazard regulations.
