A group of tourists got Wayne Thomson, chairman of Niagara Falls (Ontario) Tourism, thinking about upgrading the lighting of the well- known fall, reported Buffalo Business First.

It was 9 in the evening, the lights were on while the tourists asked when the falls would be lit up. The decades-old lighting apparently wasn’t enough to wow the visitors.

The bi- national Niagara Falls Illumination Board decided to invest in US $4 million to renew the lighting system, converting the conventional zeon lights to LED ones. The new lighting system have more than 1,800 color combinations. The conversion is expected to save 82% of the original energy. Meanwhile, the LED lightings have up to 25 years lifetime and require way less maintenance.

A mix of private and public sector will provide funding to the upgrade, including Hornblower Niagara Cruises, Falls Management Co. and the Niagara Parks Commission.

The switch will be conducted in spring 2016 and the new LED lighting system is estimated to be in place by mid-fall. Just in time for the annual Niagara Falls (Ontario) Winter Festival of Lights.
