GILE 2017: Curtain Drawn Open for ‘THINKLIGHT: the Convergent Future’

Kicking off on 9th of June, Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2017, under Messe Frankfurt’s thorough organization, gathered 2,428 exhibitors from global lighting and smart technology supply chains. Within a total exhibition space of 180,000 square meters across 17 halls of the China Import and Export Fair Complex, state-of-the-art technologies and hot-button lighting trends and concepts from 21 countries and regions were presented to trade visitors expecting to source promising lighting products and smart-tech ideas.

Showing the previous central concept ‘THINKLIGHT: A New Dimension’ in 2016 has come one step closer to being concrete, GILE 2017 was themed around ‘THINKLIGHT: the Convergent Future’. Shifts in the lighting industry have led the convergence of distinct technologies, industries and devices, expressed Ms Lucia Wong, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt.

Industry elites, through their thought-provoking seminars, also conceptualize the idea of light as integral part of the future consisting of not only just light but networking, cloud computing (computer science algorithms), and data transfer and analysing to expand the scope of lighting applications from an individual scale and a household scale (smart home) to a scale covering a whole city, namely, what they called, the concept of smart cities.

Apart from bringing out the practical side of lighting, the GILE 2017 also showed the combination of lighting and digital arts to create a higher level of aesthetics.

Other trending applications such as human centric lighting, smart home, horticultural lighting and UV LEDs were also exhibited, suggesting, even if it is yet to be mature compared with other application sectors in China, the signs of the growth of specialty lighting can already be witnessed.

Exhibiting upstream manufacturers, encompassing chip and driver IC makers, equipment and raw material providers, and packaging companies, also displayed their innovations that realize contemporarily brilliant end products.

Messe Frankfurt and Guang ya also hosted the concurrent 2017 Alighting Award Presentation Ceremony announcing the top 50 companies with their distinguished achievements in product innovation and design, lighting technology, and the presentation of their lighting projects.
