Behind the Scenes: How Samsung Technology Changed the Game at Minute Maid Park

News Source:

As baseball season comes to a close, Samsung teamed up with the Houston Astros to host its Technology Showcase at Minute Maid Park, where partners, customers and VIPs received a behind-the-scenes look at how the ballpark’s newest technology installations are upping the game when it comes to the fan experience.

Samsung innovations, which include an upgraded primary scoreboard, left-field scoreboard and ribbon boards, debuted at Minute Maid Park in March 2023. The stadium’s impressive 6,875-square-foot primary scoreboard delivers a perfect view to fans from every seat, and is just one part of a larger videoboard that spans an impressive eight stories, featuring 5.3 million stunning LEDs designed that digitally enhance the fan experience like never before.

Tech Showcase attendees caught an exclusive glimpse of the panels from behind the rafters for a look into how it all happens. And to fully understand the advantages of the videoboard, attendees also toured the Astros’ state-of-the-art Control Center, which is entirely powered by Samsung and supports all in-game, pre-game and post-game shows along with other events hosted at Minute Maid Park.

In addition to the primary scoreboard, the Astros’ entertainment and broadcast team creates content for all LED displays throughout the venue, including more than 45,000 square feet of ribbon boards along the suite deck and center-field mezzanine, a 1,000-square-foot left-field LED display and much more.

John Pollard, Head of Sports and Entertainment at Samsung, and Marcel Braithwaite, SVP of Business Operations at the Astros, facilitated a panel discussion surrounding the impact of display technology on the fan experience and the drivers behind investing in technology to make every game day environment one to remember.

“The fan experience should not be discounted. When fans have the opportunity to see themselves on the videoboard during dance cams or other in-game experiences, it can translate into a memory that can last a lifetime,” said Marcel Braithwaite, SVP of Business Operations, Houston Astros. “We chose to partner with Samsung because the breadth and depth of their offerings speaks to how the company is constantly innovating. Our organization finds intrinsic value in that innovation as we continue to challenge ourselves to think of new and exciting ways to improve fan experiences.”

“When we approached the upgrades for the ballpark, a unique aspect was striking a balance between implementing technology to improve the fan experience while also preserving the timelessness of this iconic venue,” said James Fishler, Senior Vice President of the Display and Home Entertainment Divisions, Samsung Electronics America. “Our ability to work closely with the Astros from the onset with this mindset was key to our success in delivering a next-level fan experience. Samsung is proud to be a part of Minute Maid Park’s digital transformation, and we look forward to the continued partnership with the Astros organization.”

Samsung and the Houston Astros closed the Technology Showcase with a special meet and greet opportunity with former Astros star José Cruz, and attendees enjoyed a classic day at the ballpark as the Astros hosted the Kansas City Royals.
