New VW Touareg: 38,432 LED headlights, roof load sensor and red VW logo

News Source:

The new Touareg brings many assistance systems to the luxury-class SUV and is the first VW with the new “IQ.Light – HD LED matrix headlights” with 38,432 individual LEDs, a bright red VW logo at the rear and a sensor cargo on the roof. Advance sales begin today, the most powerful model, the Touareg R eHybrid, will follow on June 22.

HD LED matrix headlights with 38,000 LEDs
The “IQ.Light – HD-LED-Matrix-Headlights” are an interactive lighting system that aligns the light of more than 38,000 micro-LEDs in the respective lane. The so-called “Lane Light” ensures that the area in front of the driver is well illuminated and that the lane is followed. With permanent high beam, oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead are hidden. With the exception of the base model of the new Touareg, the new headlights are standard on all models. Each of the new headlamps is based on three light modules and thus three light points on each side, and the daytime running lights are implemented with L-shaped LEDs. The three modules per headlamp assume each one your own tasks. On the outside there is a dual-matrix module with 16 LED pixels for lighting the area in front of the vehicle and the additional high beam. At the center is the true HD matrix module with 19,200 individually controllable LEDs, which are used to implement various lighting functions. Inside there is a reflector for static and dynamic cornering lights, cornering lights and bad weather lights. The three modules each produce a point of light. The center crossbar in the radiator grille is also illuminated for the first time in the Touareg.

At the launch of the Touareg, VW had already announced that it would soon transfer the new lighting system to the next smaller SUV class.

VW has visually redesigned both the front and rear of the Touareg. At the front, the complete unit consisting of the radiator grille and headlights, as well as the front apron, has been redesigned. The LED taillights with animated brake and turn signal functions are now designed as a light strip with a continuous LED crossbar and the VW logo is illuminated in red for the first time on a European-produced VW, except on the model essential.

Roof load sensor adapts driving behavior
The Touareg is equipped with a new roof load sensor that is networked with the chassis electronics. If possible, this should increase agility. Because if a roof box is installed, the sensor recognizes it and sends the information to assistance systems such as ESC, which intervene earlier to increase driving stability. If, on the other hand, there is no load on the roof, the systems allow for a sportier driving style than before. The chassis was also redesigned for this.

Shown as “Innovision Cockpit”
Displays in the interior, which VW calls the “Innovision Cockpit”, with wireless App Connect for smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. The cockpit consists of two screens, the “Digital Cockpit” with a screen diagonal of 30.5 cm and a resolution of 1,920 × 720 pixels (previously 31.2 cm or 12.3 inches), as well as the infotainment system ” Discover Pro” Max” with a touchscreen with a display diagonal of 15 inches (38.1 cm) and also 1,920 × 1,020 pixels. A front display is optional.
