New Innovation in Curved OLED Screens Could Revolutionize Wearable Devices

Another company is making a name for themselves in the bendable OLED display market. At FPD International 2013, Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) showcased their curved OLED display. What made their design stand out compared with other companies who have come before them is that their display has the ability to tightly warp around the edges of a smartphone.

The display is a flexible high-resolution screen that is made with C-Axis Aligned Crystal (CAAC). The screen can be rolled up in a tight four-millimeter radius and by wrapping around the phone, allows the volume controls to be accessed via touch screen rather than physical buttons.  “CAAC enables flexible displays that can be freely designed and enable very high TFT drive performance, because its mobility is high,” said SEL’s Yoshitaka Yamamoto in an interview with Diginfo TV at FPD International. “One feature of CAAC is, it does not break easy, because the crystals are continuously aligned.”

Aside from a bendable screen, the company also introduced a bendable battery. This will lead to more possibilities for wearable devices, especially due to the brightness and resolution of the displays being comparable to larger displays.
