July 21st, 2022-Saphlux Inc, a start-up company from Yale University, announced the release of NPQD® red Micro-LED light engine for AR displays. This light engine has achieved 67% red-blue photon conversion efficiency at a pixel size of 2 µm, providing a solution to the long-standing f red efficiency and brightness problem.

It is widely known that the low red efficiency and the challenges in RGB integration have come main bottlenecks in AR micro-LED display development. The efficiency of the conventional AlInGaP-based red micro-LED reduces dramatically as the chip size shrinks, resulting in high power consumption, high heat generation, and insufficient brightness.

Utilizing the proprietary NPQD® (nanopores with quantum dots) technology, Saphlux team has fabricated the first NPQD® RGB Micro-LED array with a sub-pixel size of 2 µm last October. Recently, in order to address the red micro-LED problem, Saphlux team further optimized the efficiency and addressed the crosstalk and color purity issues, launching a new-generation NPQD® red Micro-LED light engine for AR display applications.

The NPQD® red Micro-LED light engine can achieve a WPE of 5.4% at the brightness of 480,000 nits. Based on customer needs, the brightness can go up to 740,000 nits and 930,000 nits while maintaining a WPE of 4.2% and 3.5%, respectively. The red-blue light power conversion efficiency reaches 48%, giving a red-blue photon conversion efficiency of 67%. Moreover, the light engine has passed the 3000-hour display reliability test by a third party, proving that the high-efficiency, high-brightness and reliable NPQD® red Micro-LED light engine is ready for commercialization.

In addtion, the FWHM of NPQD® red Micro-LED reaches 23 nm and the color gamut is superior to DCI-P3 and close to Rec. 2020. Saphlux is now collaborating with customers to provide NPQD® red and full-color Micro-LED light engine solutions for next-generation AR displays.
