UK – Perth Concert Hall has taken a significant step towards sustainability and modernisation with the completion of its ‘Lights-Up Perth Concert Hall’ project, which saw the replacement of its tungsten lighting system with an advanced LED set-up. Spearheaded by Stage Electrics, this upgrade marks a new era for the venue, enhancing both its environmental credentials and artistic capabilities.
John Pike, head of technical services at Perth Theatre and Concert Hall, commented on the transformation, stating: “Not only was there a need to align with modern environmental standards and reduce operational costs, but there was also a strong artistic drive to enhance the visual impact of our performances. Bringing the lighting system up to speed allows us to offer a richer, more dynamic experience to our audiences and meet the expectations of contemporary performers and productions, ensuring that Perth Concert Hall can shine in terms of artistic presentation and operate sustainably in an energy-conscious world.”
The lighting system upgrade was made possible through the generous support of The Wolfson Foundation, with additional backing from the Hugh Fraser Foundation and the Forteviot Charitable Trust. This funding enabled the team at Perth Concert Hall, in collaboration with Stage Electrics, to move forward with a state-of-the-art solution that addressed the key areas of concern: environmental impact, functionality, aesthetics, and economics.
Christopher Glasgow, director of Perth Theatre and Concert Hall, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort, saying: “The Perth Concert Hall lighting system was in much need of an upgrade, in terms of functionality, aesthetics, economics and environmental impact. The Wolfson Foundation recognised the importance of modernising and improving our facilities to enhance the audience experience and reduce our carbon footprint. As a registered charity, we rely on donations to carry out our activities, so the support of such a major funder for this essential upgrade was invaluable.”
The switch from tungsten to LED lighting has provided Perth Concert Hall with numerous benefits. LED lights consume up to 80% less power, generate less heat and have a longer lifespan, resulting in lower maintenance and operational costs. The new system also offers enhanced flexibility, with instant and precise colour changes, smoother dimming and dynamic effects such as strobes and fades that were previously unattainable.
John Pike, head of technical services at Perth Theatre and Concert Hall, highlighted the quality of service and products received from Chauvet Professional and Stage Electrics: “Chauvet demonstrated that their units could meet, and in some cases surpass, the performance metrics of their competitors. Their products hit all the critical points: brightness, colour quality, dimmer curves and minimal noise operation. Furthermore, Chauvet’s offerings are highly adaptable, able to meet the demands of the rapidly changing environment in which we operate.
Stage Electrics’ assistance went beyond mere vendor support; they became true partners in our mission to modernise and elevate our venue’s capabilities. Their reliability, coupled with their proactive and knowledgeable approach, ensured that despite the hurdles, we were able to achieve our goal of creating a more sustainable and artistically advanced lighting environment.”
The completion of the ‘Lights-Up Perth Concert Hall’ project marks a significant achievement for the venue, setting a new standard for sustainable and innovative lighting in cultural spaces. The collaboration between Perth Concert Hall, Stage Electrics, and Chauvet Professional has not only improved the venue’s technical capabilities but also ensured that it remains a leading destination for performances in the region.
