Atlantic City Intelligent Streetlights Keep Pedestrians Connected and Fully Powered

Interactive LED streetlights installed on Atlantic City Boardwalk in New Jersey, U.S. are keeping local pedestrians fully connected and powered, reported Press of Atlantic City.

The 183 new LED streetlights used in The Citywide Boardwalk Interactive Lighting Display Project, are perhaps the most multifunctional lights LEDinside has seen so far in a streetlight project.

The new LED smart streetlights in Atlantic City include 90-inch LED screens with charging stations, with the capacity of sending warning messages during emergencies including weather, fires and other public safety events.

Additional features include security cameras, which are installed in the 183 LED streetlights and light poles as well as 60 separate street-end light poles with security cameras on them. There are also 90 LED screens with charging stations, and Wi-Fi connection between the first and last screens installed onto the 60 separate street-end light poles.

These streetlights come with a pretty high price tag of US $33.6 million, which is to be completed by July 4.

The project is funded publicly and privately by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and Impactivate an Atlantic City company located on the Boardwalk.

CRDA injected about US $12 million into the streetlight project, which is projected to be paid back within four to five years from revenues generated from the LED displays advertisements, said John Palmieri, executive director of the CRDA.

The improvement authority, which went on behalf of the city to the CRDA, offered a US $21.6 million loan from private company Impactivate, which would be repaid through advertising revenue from the LED screens and other features, said John Lamey, the improvement authority’s executive director.

Increasing the number of visitors, while providing security improvements on the Boardwalk and surrounding streets was one of the main reasons behind the streetlight upgrade, said Palmieri.
