Pittsburgh to Install 3,000 LED Street Lamps

Pittsburgh is being supported by an $800,000 state grant to install 3,000 LED street lamps by the end of the month in a move the city hopes will culminate with all 40,000 street lights in city business districts being replaced by LEDs.

City Councilman Bill Peduto agrees with the LED replacement. He began working on the project in 2005 and has since asked local universities ‘s experts to weigh in, had the city test more than 50 kinds of LED lights and pushed a lighting code that ensures uniform lighting standards throughout the city. He estimates the city will save $800,000 to $1 million annually in energy costs if all 40,000 lights are replaced with LEDs.
