We have now learned that COVID-19 is transmitted through droplets or surfaces contact of the infected individuals. As a result, wearing mask and intensifying disinfection are considered effective ways to prevent infection. Combining above two solutions, a UVC LED embedded mask was developed and raised more than US$ 1 million on a crowdfunding platform.

The product, named UVMask, was launched by UM System, a subsidiary of Measure Inc. focusing on optical and bio-technology, on June 25, 2020. According to UM System, UVMask is a reusable face mask integrating UVC LEDs which enable air purification.
The mask includes two UVC LEDs with an illuminance of 25,000μW/cm2. The team claimed that the UVC LEDs are sealed by its patent-pending technology “Sterile-Vortex,” and can sterilize the air while users breathe. Supplier of its UVC LED is from Japan.
The mask is sold at US$ 99 on the crowdfunding website and is scheduled to deliver in October 2020.
Disinfecting products incorporating UV light sources such as UVC LEDs and UV lamps are very popular these days as UVC light is proven effective for deactivate viruses and pathogens including SARS-CoV-2. But as UV lights are powerful and can cause harm to the eyes and skin of human and animals, people have to be extra cautious when using UV disinfecting products.
