LG Display Begins Full-scale Production Preparation for the Longest Automotive Display

News Source:

LG Display unveiled a Pillar-to-Pillar Liquid Crystal Display at the world’s largest Information Technology and consumer electronics exhibition, CES 2024, in January 2024.

Following its supply of a 27-inch Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display to Hyundai Motor’s Genesis last year, LG Display recently secured an order for a large Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) from a foreign premium automaker. This display, being the longest among the automotive displays produced by LG Display, is set to begin mass production in the first quarter (January to March) of 2026, with preparations for production having recently commenced in earnest.

The sector where LG Display has achieved this order success is for displays that cover the dashboard in a Pillar-to-Pillar (P2P) fashion. Stretching across the dashboard from the driver’s seat to the passenger’s side, it fills the length between the pillars (columns) at both ends of the car’s front window frame, thus named P2P. It’s a large screen for vehicles, used to display information such as speed, remaining fuel, tire condition, and also for entertainment purposes like dramas, movies, and music.

At the CES 2024, the world’s largest IT and consumer electronics exhibition held in January 2024, LG Display presented a 57-inch P2P LCD and won an innovation award. LG Display is the first in the world to implement a P2P LCD of around 50 inches. LG Display has been supplying a 27-inch OLED for Genesis’s GV80 model, launched last year for the 2024 lineup, which extends from the driver’s seat to the center fascia. The display that has been recently ordered is speculated to be in the 30-inch range and will be a P2P product.

P2P displays are among the most prioritized products for complete car manufacturers to introduce, as they are directly connected to car performance and convenience. As autonomous driving technology continues to advance, how time is spent during driving becomes increasingly important, making large-screen displays more sought after. Executive Kim explained, “When the display screen grows to over 30 inches, it allows for multiple operations at the same time, providing a convenient and enjoyable riding experience.”

The reason why LG Display’s P2P LCD is doing well in the global market is because it implements high-quality, large screens with strong durability. Competitors, including Chinese display companies, have not yet managed to produce large P2P LCDs with a single screen. Most are made by connecting several smaller displays together. Connecting multiple screens can lead to reduced touch sensitivity and discontinuities in videos and images, which is a significant drawback.
