Seoul Semiconductor Secures MicroLED Patent Deal with Silicon Core for Virtual Production

News Source:

Seoul Semiconductor has signed a MicroLED patent license agreement with SiliconCore of the United States, strengthening its position in virtual production applications using MicroLED displays. The deal, signed in September but recently brought to light by The Elec, provides Seoul Semiconductor access to 36 Silicon Core patents related to MicroLED technology. While not an exclusive agreement, this allows Seoul Semiconductor to leverage Silicon Core’s intellectual property as it explores opportunities in LED-enabled virtual production.

At Display Week 2023, Seoul Semiconductor exhibited its own Wicop Pixel MicroLED technology. The company has touted the possibilities for Wicop Pixel beyond displays, including virtual production and automotive applications. Securing a domestic MicroLED supply chain has become an important topic as the Korean government looks to foster inorganic display technology. With LG Innotek having exited the LED business in 2020, Seoul Semiconductor’s patent deal could strengthen its leverage here.

Despite over KRW 1 trillion ($737 million) in consolidated revenue annually, Seoul Semiconductor has seen operating losses recently due to IT and TV market downturns. The company will look to MicroLED and other innovations to turn its fortunes around in the years ahead.
