Scotland Estimated to Save Millions of Pounds Annually Through LED Streetlight Upgrade

Scotland could save millions of pounds per year by upgrading to LED streetlights, according to statistics compiled by Scottish Future Trust.

Only 5% of Scotland’s 890,820 streetlights are using energy-efficient bulbs, reported STV news.

About GBP 40 million (US $62.60 million) is spent every year on streetlighting, but switching to LED could cut down streetlight energy bills by 50% to 70%, or GBP 19 million to GBP 26.6 million.

Conventional streetlight cost 13 pence per night, but swapping to more energy efficient lights can cut costs to 9 pence per night.

The figures emerged ahead of a conference hosted by Scottish Renewables in Edinburgh next month, which speakers around the world will look into ways to combine energy, transport, industry, and civic society to save energy.
