Peterborough City Council Replaces Street Lights with LEDs

Peterborough City Council has agreed a £2 million contract to replace street lights with LED lamps.

The contract will see more than 4,500 bulbs replaced with LED lamps by Birse Civils. In addition, the firm will also replace approximately 800 full street lighting units and a control management system which will allow the operating times and lighting levels to be controlled remotely.

Only residential and link roads will be included in the upgrade programme and streets will be identified using criteria including the technology already in place, potential energy savings and the condition of current lighting.

Councillor Peter Hiller, the city council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Neighbourhoods and Planning, said: “We have already replaced 1,200 street lamps with the new energy efficient bulbs so I am delighted that we are now in a position to replace at least a further 4,600.”

The contract is the second phase of the programme, which saw 1,200 lamps replaced in 2011.
