According to Reuters, citing The Information, sources say Amazon is developing AR glasses for consumers, a move that would put the company in direct competition with Meta. The product is reportedly slated for release in late 2026 or early 2027, as the report indicates.
The project would mark Amazon’s entry into the consumer AR-glasses market. However, Reuters notes that the company reportedly has already been developing specialized eyewear for its delivery workforce. According to The Information, citing sources, those delivery-focused glasses could debut as early as the second quarter of 2026, with an initial production run of about 100,000 units.
The report also adds that while both models share the same display technology, the consumer version is expected to feature a full-color display and a sleeker, more compact design than the delivery model.
Further underscoring the market’s momentum, TrendForce notes that the AR glasses sector is set to gain traction in 2025 as international brands roll out prototypes. Combined with falling OLEDoS product prices, global AR shipments are projected to reach 600,000 units in 2025.
According to TrendForce, in the longer term, strong growth in notification-style AR glasses will be driven by the maturation of advanced full-color AR technology. Shipments are forecast to surge to 32.1 million units by 2030.
Meta to Launch Smart Glasses Featuring Built-In Display
Meanwhile, The Verge, citing Bloomberg, reports that Meta is expected to unveil its “Hypernova” smart glasses at the upcoming Connect event. According to Bloomberg, the device is positioned as a step beyond the company’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, offering a small display on the right lens for apps and real-time alerts.
The report further adds that Meta is also developing a pair of AR glasses called Orion, which it plans to provide to software developers in 2026 for application building and testing. However, Bloomberg notes that Orion will not reach consumers directly; instead, Meta reportedly intends to launch a successor, code-named “Artemis,” as early as 2027.
Beyond Meta and Amazon, Google is also moving into smart glasses, partnering with China’s Xreal to launch Project Aura, a new Android XR device, according to Bloomberg and The Verge.
