One of the sport’s most storied grounds — became something it had never been before: a digital arena. The inaugural Virtual Taekwondo (VTKD) Rome Open transformed Italy’s most prestigious sports complex into a stage for the next chapter of the sport, and the athletes who stepped onto it made history.

Held alongside the World Taekwondo Grand Prix, the Rome Open brought together 19 athletes from five countries for a single-elimination tournament that drew support from every corner of the bracket, each country with their own contingent willing them forward.
The Podium

From left to right: Nathan Henn (USA), Cassius Doroja (Canada), Stefano Meggiolo (Italy), and Navya Gupta (Norway).
Canada’s Cassius Doroja claimed the gold, emerging from a field that spanned continents to take the inaugural title. The USA’s Nathan Henn pushed him every step of the way, earning silver in a result that underlines the growing depth of competitive VTKD.
On the bronze podium, Italy’s own Stefano Maggiolo gave the home crowd the moment they had been waiting for, joined by Navya Gupta, Norway, whose run through the bracket reflected exactly the kind of boundary-breaking performance VTKD was built for.
In Cassius’ own words:
“I’ve competed in traditional taekwondo my entire life, but Virtual Taekwondo challenged me in a completely new way. Rome was my chance to see where I stood, and winning gold at the Foro Italico was an unforgettable moment. Competing in a venue with so much history and opening the season on top made the achievement even more meaningful.”
The Road Here

This is what VTKD looks like on the world stage. It started with the Olympic Esports Series in Singapore in 2023. It grew at the World Championships in Singapore in 2024, where over 120 athletes from 23 countries competed. And now, it has come to Foro Italico to stand shoulder to shoulder with the World Taekwondo Grand Prix.
The Rome Open also marks the beginning of a ranked worldwide VTKD match circuit — one that will grow alongside the sport itself, giving athletes everywhere a path to prove themselves on the global stage. And for Cassius, the win represents more than a result:
“More than the medal, I’m excited about being part of something bigger. Virtual Taekwondo is helping redefine what’s possible in our sport, and I feel fortunate to be involved at the beginning of that journey.”
