Osram Opto Releases Mini Components with Thin-Film Chips

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is launching three new generations of mini components with thin-film chips (InGaAlP technology): CHIPLED 0402, CHIPLED with lens and Firefly. All three benefit from the optimum extraction of light from surface emitters and have impressively high efficiency and brightness.

• CHIPLED 0402 is a compact unit measuring 1.0 x 0.55 x 0.35 mm and fits in a standard SMT package. Up to now the standard brightness was 45-280 mcd at 20 mA; now thanks to thin-film technology it is 45-140 mcd at 5 mA. The component has a colorless diffused encapsulation and is a side emitter. The Mini LED provides bright and extremely low-profile backlighting for pushbuttons, switches and indicators in a wide range of applications including MP3 players, cell phones and laptops. When integrated in dot matrix displays the LED provides impressive illumination for moving light effects such as dancing butterflies and opening blossoms. It can also be used as efficient lighting for steps, escape routes, switches and signal lights.

• Like the normal CHIPLED, the CHIPLED with lens fits in a standard SMT package and is OSRAM’s smallest LED with integrated optics. It measures 3.2 x 1.6 x 1.8 mm. With its 20° beam angle it offers focused light with a typical luminous intensity of 7 cd at 20 mA for amber. An additional zener diode ensures high ESD stability and makes the small lens component ideal for all mobile applications. It reveals its strengths as an auto-focus auxiliary light and also in signal and symbol luminaires.

• The smallest of the mini components is the Firefly which measures 1.0 x 0.55 x 0.3 mm. At just 0.3 mm it has the thinnest SMT package in OSRAM’s LED product portfolio. With its side emission characteristics it produces a remarkable luminous intensity of 71-180 mcd at 5 mA in amber. Like the CHIPLED it is ideal for low-profile applications in mobile terminals such as MP3 players and laptops.
