San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge May Install LED lights Display

Officials from San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge are about to unveil plans for a light display to mark the bridge's 75th anniversary on Thursday morning on Treasure Island.

The $7 million display would go up next year and feature 30,000 white LED lights on the west span's suspension and suspender cables, according to the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The independently-controlled lights would create patterns based on traffic, weather and the motion of the bridge.

According to Leo Villareal, the artist who designed the display, it would be visible from San Francisco's waterfront but not to drivers crossing the bridge.

The project would be privately funded. It is currently going through the California Department of Transportation's approval process. If it goes through, it is expected to be up in September and remain illuminated each night for two years.
