The Consumer Product Safety Commission Recalls LED Bulbs for Fire Hazard

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced to recall more than a half-million LED light bulbs of various brands on Tuesday, March 19, 2013.

Eight instances of the bulbs associated with visible smoke or fire have been reported.  A total of 68 product failures have been reported, including damage to light sockets, melted fixtures, burned flooring, damaged to a circuit and damage to a lamp.

The 120-volt LED bulbs, sold as 6-watt or 8-watt bulbs equivalent to a 40-watt or 50-watt incandescent bulb, were marketed under brand names including Definity, EcoSmart, Sylvania and Westinghouse.

The bulbs were made in China, with a small number of them undergoing final assembly in Florida or Mexico, in various months during 2010 and 2011.  They were sold at various retailers including hardware, lighting and electrical supply stores.

Consumers should immediately remove the bulbs from sockets, lamps or fixtures and contact Lighting Science Group corporation for replacement bulbs.  The company can be contacted toll free at (855) 574-2533 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at http://www.lsgc.com/recall/.
