LAMPServe LED Communication Technology can Reach Speeds of 100 Megabits per Second

Venture firm LAMPServe in Naha Okinawa Japan is a company researching LED visual light communication technology. In September the company plans to conduct a worldwide outdoor lighting demonstration experiment and if successful will present the lighting in areas that lack communication infrastructure like Africa, Asia, and emerging market countries.

LAMPServe optical communication component possesses high dynamic range specifications.

The experiment is conducted with the cooperation between Japan and Estonia with Japan providing the underlying technology and hardware and Estonia being responsible for software development. President of LAMPServe Toyoko Ichiro states that currently one of street light used to send and receive communications costs around ¥ 100,000(US $1,022) to lay. Communication speed is usually around 100 megabits per second.
LAMPServe in May of this year obtained the patent for carrying out outdoor visible light communication technology. The company is scheduled to carry out the first experiment in Estonia this September followed by tests in Okinawa.

LAMPServe plans to use ordinary street lights already in place to be used as communication infrastructures. Installing the LED street lights will not only have lighting capabilities, but at the same time will also have communication capabilities. Date from related experiments shows that it is possible to conduct visual light communication from a distance of 200 meters.

Mr. Ichiro started to take notice of the use of LED in communication technology about 5 years ago and in March of 2011 established LAMPServe.
