Cree anticipates to invest around US $17.66 million into the construction project. The company has received a building permit for the construction of a 285,000 square foot building, said a spokeswoman in an email to The Herald Sun. The spokeswoman revealed that the building will be for “future manufacturing and related office space needs.”

“Construction of the shell could begin as early as summer 2014, and will take about one year to complete,” said the email to the North Carolina newspaper.

Permits for construction of building shells are usually issued to companies for quick construction, such as shopping centers, said Gene Brandham, director of Durham City-County Inspections. Companies that apply for these types of permits want to be able to build an exterior and have tenants then build-out of their interior spaces.
