Nail Art Becoming Next Wearable Device Frontier

Ladies that fancy a manicure might be getting more than just colorful designs in the near future. A U.S. design project is aiming to outdo Japanese manufacturer Takara Tomy Arts decorative stick-on LED nails by taking nail art to the next digital level.

The Future of Wearable Services, a project initiated by Art Center College of Design at Media Design Practice, and Intel Sponsored Wearable Ecologies Studio are working to make customizable wearable nail devices. The prototype nails still look rather bulky and unaesthetic, but offers plenty of potential. Customers that visit the still hypothetical Pop-Up Sensor Nail Salon could make the wearable nail device to their liking by including LEDs, heart rate sensors or others.

According to a Daily Beast report, the sensors in the current nail designs still require large watch batteries. The two project designers Jenny Rodenhouse and Kristina Ortega are still experimenting with Redboard nail designs that enables nail circuits without soldering. However, it will probably still take a while before the designers arrive to a simple and sleek nail design.
