LG Display (LGD) will supply OLED panels to German automotive manufacturers including Daimler-Benz, according to a Korea Economic Daily Report.
As the smart car and electric vehicle market demand rises, the Korean display manufacturer plans to strengthen its presence in the automotive display market.
The OLED supply deal with major German car makers was signed on June 26, 2014, said LGD. The contract involves LGD supplying car makers OLED displays for next-generation smart cars to be launched within the next few years. LGD noted is still conducting reliability tests on the OLEDs. A company official commented, "We expect plastic OLED panels will fast replace the currently available glass-made LCD panels."
The company aims to become a leading automotive lighting supplier, and plans to increase automotive display panels by 30 percent a year, said Han Sang-beom, LGD president at a company press conference at the Paju plant on June 25, 2014. Last year the company reported a KRW 500 billion (US $50 million) in automotive displays, and aspires to double sales by 2016.
