China based Elech-Tech’s Yangzhou subsidiary has begun mass production of LED wafers. Equipment used at its Yangzhou factory are mainly 14x4” MOCVD wafer production units from U.S. manufacturer Veeco. The company currently has 12 units in operation with a yearly production capacity of 190,000 pcs, which can then produce 50,000 chips.

Parent company Elec-Tech invested a total of US $225 million to establish the Yangzhou subsidiary whose factory covers an area of 300 mu. The factory was mainly established for the assembly and sale of LED wafers, chip packing, LED optic lighting equipment, control and software systems, module R&D, and providing related technical advice and production. Elec-Tech established four large manufacturing bases in Yangzhou in 2009. Over the past few years, the company has introduced 12 MOCVD units for wafer production, which are currently all in operation.

Wafers are produced at the upper most segment of the LED industry chain and is the main material used to create LED chips. By producing 4 inch wafers rather than 2 inch wafers, Elec-Tech is able to increase production capacity and cost advantages, said Chairman Wang Donglei.
