Apple’s Micro-LED Display Could Replace OLED Screens in Wearable Devices

A display expert believes micro-LED displays, such as those made by Apple’s newly acquired low-power display maker LuxVue could become a game changer in the display market, according to a report by Apple Insider.

Energy efficient low-power micro-LED screens potentially could replace displays in future devices, such as OLED displays in wearable devices including Apple Watch.

At Display Week trade show, Candice Brown-Elliot, CEO of Nouvoyance and creator of the Pentile Matrix pixel configuration for Samsung OLED panels found that mico-LED displays was one of the potentially disruptive technologies at the show.

The technology was relatively unknown to the masses, until Apple acquired LuxVue last year, and now the wider community is rushing to learn more about them, she said.

There are still limitations to micro-LEDs applications, experts noted that current technology would make it difficult to build display panels of significant sizes. This indicates LuxVue technology’s is unlikely to become LCD screens found in iPhone, iPad or MacBook.

However, micro-LED displays could become an option for smaller displays, such as Apple Watches, according to Ken Warner of Display Daily.

Apple currently uses Samsung OLED displays, which can extend the device’s battery life.

Warner projects the micro-LED displays will be incorporated in Apple Watch next year, but it is probably too early to say. Many Apple acquisitions have taken longer to appear in products, for example Apple’s public transit app maker HopStop acquired in mid 2013 will not be transiting directions until iOS 9 is launched this fall.
