India Can Save US $6B Annually By Switching to LEDs by 2018

News Source:

By replacing traditional luminaires with LEDs, India could save US$ 6 billion annually by 2018, said Piyush Goyal, Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy in the Government of India.

The government has distributed 45.9 million LED bulbs nationwide through its Domestic Efficient Lighting Program (DELP).

When the country completes replacing the 710 million traditional lights with LEDs, the country will be able to save 100 billion units of electricity, said the minister at the Harvard College U.S. India Initiative Conference held in Mumbai recently.

Conserving energy has been a top priority for the large South Asian state, where many states are still in the dark.

According to the minister, states including Jharkand and Chhattisgarh, where there are large deposits of coal remain energy starved.

The Indian government is striving to keep the lighting upgrade as transparent as possible, and the public can check in real-time village electrifying process.
